United States Origin Tour

Tour of locations relating to the founding, and early years of, the USA.

£160-£280 per group

Service Description

London has a rich history with many connections to the US and well-known American figures. Whether explorers making their way from the Docklands to the then American Colonies or the Founding Fathers spending time in the Capital, they all left their mark here- in the form of plaques, monuments, and museums. In the centuries following, American from all different fields and backgrounds resided in London and my two-hour walking tour They Came Back: Americans in Mayfair (see tour listing) tells the stories of a dozen or so of them in just one small area and their impact. These include people like Harry Gordon Selfridge, Juliette Gordon Low, John Adams, Alexander Graham Bell, and Wallis Simpson. For those who would like to make a longer tour focusing on American connections in London, I can also offer a Pick and Mix tour of individuals and locations instrumental to the settling and founding of the United States. Depending on how many stops you would like to incorporate into the tour, it can be done as a half-day (four-hour) or full-day (eight-hour) Tour via public transport or your own hired taxi or coach. Some stops include multiple things to discover and so may take some time. The stops include: Virginia Settlers Memorial, Blackwall: Jamestown sailing. St. Mary’s Church, Rotherhithe: Journey of the Mayflower. All Hallows by the Tower: Church and Museum with links to William Penn. Temple Church (dependant upon opening hours)/ Inns of Court: Connections to drafting and content of the Constitution and Bill of Rights; Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Runnymede (Magna Carta and JFK Memorials) in Surrey: Related to drafting and content of the Constitution and Bill of Rights; American Bar Association; JFK legacy. “Little America”, Grosvenor Square: Site of former US Embassy. Benjamin Franklin: Home/ Museum. Benedict Arnold: Home and Church. Texas Legation Statues and plaque for George Washington, Abraham Lincoln (multiple), Lady Astor, George Peabody, William Waldorf Astoria, and many others.
